Lost Heaven, 1930s — Tommy Angelo. The best starting point for newcomers because it introduces the core Mafia themes through Tommy's recruitment into the Salieri family and his gradual rise through organized crime.

Empire Bay, 1940s-1950s — Vito Scaletta. Continues the American crime saga into a later generation and contains direct narrative connections to characters and events from the first Mafia story.

New Bordeaux, 1968 — Lincoln Clay. Moves the series into the late 1960s and connects to Mafia II through returning characters, especially Vito Scaletta.

Sicily, early 1900s — Enzo Favara. The earliest story chronologically. It works without knowledge of the American games, but playing it after the trilogy makes its exploration of the Mafia's Sicilian roots more meaningful.
